Engine 15 Brewing Approved To Open Urban Beer Garden

Locally-grown, specialty manufacturing company Engine 15 Brewing is proceding with plans of turning an industrial facility west of downtown Jacksonville, into a unique urban beer garden now that the property has been re-zoned to allow for on-site retail sales. The area surrounding the brewery could be poised to become a Southeastern version of Pittsburgh’s Strip District or Detroit’s Eastern Market if zoning rules can be relaxed on similar sites nearby. The Space In-between: Hansontown

Today, it's considered 'the space in-between'. It's not officially within the Springfield Historic District and no one in downtown pays any attention to what happens on the north side of State Street. Nevertheless, Hansontown was an 19th century black community that Jacksonville eventually grew up around. One of Jacksonville's densest, it was known as the city's largest slum and ultimately erased from existence with mid-20th century urban renewal funding. Read More

Second Phase of Future I-795 Opens

Last week, the city's latest expressway link opened, creating another link between I-95, US 1 (Philips Highway) and I-295 East Beltway. Slowly but surely, the creation of what will become I-795 is becoming a reality. When complete in 2018, the highway will connect I-295 East Beltway to CR 2209 in St. Johns County. Read More
