About Downtown Stuart

Stuart is a city of 17,425 residents that was named in honor of Homer “Jack” Hine Stuart Jr. in 1895. Originally called Potsdam, the city was incorporated as a town in 1914 and chartered as a city and county seat in 1925. Anchoring Florida’s Treasure Coast and located on the St. Lucie River, Downtown Stuart is a historic, pedestrian scale setting featuring over 50 locally-owned shops, restaurants and galleries. Called the Sailfish Capital of the World, Stuart was named “America’s Happiest Seaside Town” in 2016 by Coastal Living Magazine.

The Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) is a Class II regional railroad with 351-miles of mainline track between Jacksonville and Miami. It was constructed by Standard Oil tycoon Henry Flagler, through present day Stuart in 1894.
