Jacksonville has a long and robust aviation history. Pilot Bessie Coleman, the first African-American woman to earn a pilot’s license, died at Jacksonville’s Paxon Field during a test flight in 1926. The city’s first commercial airport was built all the way back in 1927. But probably the most undersung story from Jacksonville’s flying history is that Naval Air Station Jacksonville is the birthplace of the Navy’s legendary demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels, who’ve been providing aerial spectacle across the globe ever since their first shows in Jacksonville in 1946.

The Blue Angels once again returned to their birthplace on October 22 and 23 for the 2022 NAS Jacksonville Air Show. Jacksonville photographer Marcelo Murillo was on hand to capture scenes of classic aircraft and spectacular maneuvers in the skies over the River City.
