Auburn Avenue Photo Tour

1. Founded by Ricci de Forest in 2004, the Madam C.J. Walker’s Beauty Shoppe Museum is located in a building that was once occupied by a Madam C.J. Walker beauty salon and the first radio station owned and programmed by African Americans. Walker was recognized as the first self-made black female millionaire.

2. Dating back to 1869, the current Wheat Street Baptist Church building was completed in 1921. Church pastor Rev. William Holmes Borders, Sr. (1905-1993) was a prominent activist in the Civil Rights movement.

3. Haugabrooks Funeral Home was established in 1929 by Mrs. Geneva Moton Haugabrooks. While the funeral home has moved on to a different location, the Historic District Development Corporation recently restored the building into an event space.

4. The Atlanta Breakfast Club is a popular Black-owned restaurant known for its chicken and waffles. The popular eatery opened a chicken and waffles coffee counter on Auburn Avenue in September 2020.

6. The Prince Hall Masonic Building houses the national headquarters of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

10. Completed in the 1960s, the Downtown Connector, the concurrent section of Interstate 75 and Interstate 85, was devastating to the vitality of Auburn Avenue. As a part of the Auburn Avenue Historic and Cultural Information Project, a large scale mural featuring images of past landmarks was designed by Ron and Therese Huffman and installed by DeNyse Companies. Underpass lighting elements were installed by Brooks Berry Haynie & Associates.

The Old Fellows Building and Auditorium was built in 1912 and 1913 as the headquarters of the District Grand Lodge No. 18, Jurisdiction of Georgia, of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows in America. During the neighborhood’s heyday, this complex housed several black-owned businesses and black professionals.

14. This mural honors John Lewis, a founding leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
